Crispy Stuffed Tofu Puffs Recipe: How to Make Delicious Tofu Bergedil at Home
"Tofu Bergedil" is a delicious Malaysian dish where tofu puffs are stuffed with a flavorful mixture and then deep-fried. Here's a recipe for "Stuffed Tofu Puff" or "Tofu Bergedil":
Ingredients:
For the Stuffed Tofu Puffs:
- 1 pack of 270gm Tung Lam Tofu Puff
- 2 cup mashed potatoes
- 1 cup minced chicken or beef (optional)
- 2 small onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Cooking oil for frying
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Tofu Puffs:
- Carefully cut a small slit into each tofu puff to create a pocket for the stuffing. Be gentle to avoid tearing the tofu puffs.
-
Prepare the Filling:
- Heat some oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the minced chicken or beef (if using) and cook until it's no longer pink.
- Add the chopped onion and garlic to the pan and sauté until they become soft and translucent.
- Stir in the mashed potatoes and spices (turmeric, cumin, chili powder).
- Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Cook for a few more minutes until the filling is well combined and fragrant.
-
Stuff the Tofu Puffs:
- Using a small spoon or your fingers, stuff each tofu puff with the prepared filling mixture. Press the tofu gently to close the opening and ensure the filling is securely inside.
-
Deep-Fry the Stuffed Tofu Puffs:
- Heat enough cooking oil in a deep frying pan or wok to submerge the stuffed tofu puffs.
- Once the oil is hot (around 350°F or 180°C), carefully place the stuffed tofu puffs into the hot oil, one at a time.
- Fry them until they turn golden brown and crispy on the outside, turning them occasionally to ensure even frying. This should take about 4-5 minutes.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the stuffed tofu puffs from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
-
Serve:
- Let the stuffed tofu puffs cool for a minute or two before serving.
- Tofu Bergedil is traditionally served with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce, such as chili sauce or a tamarind-based sauce.
